After 9/11 there were signs of hope and faith even in the midst of so much death and destruction. One the most famous symbols from 9/11 is the “iron cross” made from two pieces of the World Trade Center fused together in the shape of a cross.
The New York Times reported that another religious artifact from World Trade Center is less well known, but still brings goosebumps.
During the excavation of the rubble, a chunk of the World Trade Center was found with a Bible fused into it. The chilling part was which particular Bible verse was visible for all the world to see.
“Retaliation,” reads the verse from the Sermon on the Mount, in the Gospel of Matthew. “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
This is an incredibly powerful show of symbolism. On the day that almost all of Americans were crying out for revenge, the Bible was reminding us that perhaps revenge isn’t always the best path.
